What is mobile prosthetics?

Mobile prosthetics is the area of dental prosthetics that focuses on the restoration of the lost teeth and soft tissues of the oral cavity. Mobile prosthetic restoration is a device that can easily be removed by the patient.

Such devices replace lost tissue with an aesthetically functioning unit of dental arches, improving the patients’ health and quality of life.

When to opt for a removable prosthetic device?

A removable prosthetic device is an option when multiple or all teeth are missing or when there is extensive loss of soft tissue (gingival level) and alveolar ridge resorption. It is used when it is not possible to make a fixed prosthetic device or when such a device is not affordable. Nowadays complete toothlessness can also be solved by fixed prosthetic devices on 4 or 6 implants in a jaw (all-on-4 or all-on-6, here you can find out more about this solution).

What are removable prosthetic devices and how do they differ from fixed prosthetic devices?

Removable prosthetic devices include all prosthetic devices which can be removed or which, unlike fixed prosthetic devices, are not permanently cemented onto the existing tooth tissues, teeth and/or dental implants. Those are partial dentures (made when some teeth are missing), complete or full dentures (made when all teeth are missing) and combined dentures which are a combination of a fixed part, such as a dental bridge and a removable prosthesis (e.g. Wironit prosthesis).

Mobile prosthetic devices also differ with regard to different types of denture bases which support the artificial teeth; there are plastic (acrylic) and metal (Wironit) devices.
